August 24, 2008:

Cafeteria Update: A.V.I. Foodsystems Management met with the Shop Committee on Friday, August 15, 2008. Wendy Lim and Ivar Manning told us the Café is losing money and they intended to close down the service on Friday, August 22, 2008 for third shift.

The Shop Committee stated that at the previous meetings we had given Café Management two (2) pages of suggestions and ideas to make the Café more profitable and to date they have made no move to change anything or try out our suggestions. Such as better hours on third shift, more palatable food and foods people want. Ivar once again stated his intentions to close third shift Café effective Friday, August 22, 2008. The Shop Committee was unanimous in telling Parma Management and Café Management that we demand they honor our Local Agreement and keep the Café open on all shifts with the proper number of people working in the Plant per the Local Memo of Understanding.

You have all seen the A.V.I. posting to close for third shift. Obviously, A.V.I. Management does not care about their agreement with G.M. Parma Management, so the Shop Committee will serve G.M. Parma Management with a policy grievance.

President Tito Boneta and I have also been in conversations with U.A.W. Region 2-B Representative John Mohan and we are conscience of the precarious situation. Brother Mohan represents the Cafeteria Workers U.A.W. Local and none of us want the Union Café workers to be put out of a job, however, the Shop Committee has not and will not agree to shut down or alter the Local Memo of Understanding on Café service!

C.O.L.A.: On Monday, August 18, 2008, we received a notification on a C.O.L.A. increase. The U.S. Consumer Price Index for May, June, July 2008 is 208.44 which generates a seventy two cent (.72) increase, minus the ten cent (.10) diversion, we will receive an actual increase of sixty-two cents (.62) per hour. The previous C.O.L.A. was forty-six cents (.46) per hour, forty-six cents (.46) plus sixty two-cents (.62) = one dollar and eight cents ($1.08). Therefore, eligible hourly employees covered by the 2007 U.A.W. - G.M. National Agreement will be paid one dollar and eight cents ($1.08) per hour cost of Living Allowance for all hours worked on or after September 1, 2008 until further notice! (Actual contract language will apply) reference Paragraph (101(g) and (101) (h) N.A.
