October 14, 2008:
Café and Vending Boycott: At the Local
1005 General Membership Meeting held Sunday, October 12, 2008,
the subject of Café services to third shift being cut by A.V.I.
Food Services was brought up. The Shop Chairman gave an update on
what has transpired to date. He filed a Group-Policy grievance
(#C-1018184) charging A.V.I. Food Services and Local Management
with a violation of the L.M.O.U. item #2 (Food Services). Local
Management informed the Shop Committee that A.V.I. stated they
were not interested in re-opening the Cafe on 3rd shift. Also,
President Tito Boneta and Ken Jelen have been in repeated contact
with International Servicing Representative John Mohan who
informed us that A.V.I. had also told him they were not
interested in re-opening the Café on 3rd shift and also has
refused to re-negotiate the Local Agreement for the Café
Workers.
After these explanations, a UAW member made a motion to Boycott
the A.V.I. Food and Vending Services! President Boneta processed
the motion which was discussed at great length then he took a
vote on the motion which was passed unanimously by the
Membership.
Brothers and Sisters please brown bag your food until
we resolve this issue and A.V.I. Food Services honors our Local
Agreement. Also, do not commit or condone any acts of aggression
to A.V.I. personnel or Café or Vending property or machines.
This is not personal, it is a contractual issue and we hope the
Boycott will bring a speedy closure! Acts of vandalism or abuse
will not be tolerated!
Plant Closing: On Monday, October 13,
2008, Local Management informed the Union of a communication from
Cathy Clegg, the North American Manufacturing Manager. She
announced G.M.s intent to cease operations at the Grand
Rapids Metal Center and Die Operations by the end of the calendar
year 2009. She further stated that G.M. would continue to assess
the stamping capacity and align with market demand as required.
She announced plans to reallocate Grand Rapids work to the
remaining Metal Centers. President Boneta and I will continue to
keep you informed of future development.
