November 17, 2008:
NEW WORK ROLL OUT: As you are all now
aware, a Perfect Storm is engulfing the auto
industry. Surely weathering this unprecedented down-turn will
effect us all in some way. We here in Parma are lucky to have the
right product mix, which so far has minimized our losses. Where
is the bottom, no one knows, but it seems like we are not there
yet. The news media and economists are all taking pot shots at
the domestic auto industry. Our Congressional Leaders are all
guilty of allowing our jobs to be sourced offshore and allowed
foreign products to be imported and even made in whole or part on
American soil. There is no level playing field, there are no
reprisals. In foreign countries, the governments protect their
industrial base, but in America, greed has overshadowed common
sense. Now we, the American Citizens, are left holding the bag.
Call (877-331-1223) your Senators and Congressmen and let them
know that the U.S. Big Three automakers need to be bailed out
also or three million other U.S. workers will lose their jobs in
supplier industries.
In May and June of 2008, you elected a new Shop Committee. We set
about to improve the Parma and Local 1005 U.A.W.s
competitive position by agreeing to adapt the Work
Rule changes dealing with blurring the Lines of
Demarcation under Doc 112. Also, adding to the P.M.P.
Production Maintenance Partnership under Doc. 157 we
added language for Skilled Trades Partners. Further,
under Doc. 159, we agreed to the exit strategy for
Non-Strategic Work. All this language was previously
negotiated and ratified in the 2007 National Agreement. With
these agreements, we raised our Parma Competitive Operating
Agreement score to 92.38. This was a difficult and daunting
challenge with much political risk to the Parma Complex. Today,
we are seeing the results of our efforts combined with the hard
work of this membership meeting your S.P.Q.R.C. & E. goals.
These re-allocations the Corporation is announcing are the fruit
of our combined efforts and youre to be congratulated for
your patience and understanding. You, the membership, deserve the
enhanced job security this work will bring to Parma and Local
1005. Once again, congratulations and thank you for your support.
